How to Choose a Stand-Alone Medicare Part D Plan

What to look for in a part d plan, and how to find a good plan fast.

You can enroll in Part D coverage either through a stand-alone Part D Plan or a Medicare Advantage plan. There is no overall ‘best’ Part D plan on the market. You are looking for the one that is best for you. That means finding the plan that will cover all of your prescriptions for the least amount of money per year.

Medicare Part D plans are all very similar

Don’t bother trying to figure this out by looking through the benefits document for each plan. With so many options, it’s just not practical to do this comparison by hand.

That’s why Medicare created an online tool called the ‘Medicare Plan Finder’. With the plan finder, you can input your drug list once, and then automatically calculate total drug costs for both MAPD and stand-alone Part D plan.

Use the plan finder to start your search, then go back and double check the math for your top few choices. The plan finder has been known to make mistakes.

Here’s how I recommend you use the Plan Finder:

  1. Make a list of Part D plans in your area

  2. Remove plans that don’t cover all of your prescriptions

  3. Remove plans that don’t have a convenient in-network pharmacy

  4. Remove plans that have below a 3.5-star rating

  5. Compare the top three plans you have left side by side and choose a winner!
